Melanin is a substance that gives the skin and hair it's natural color. Its also protects the skin from sunlight. Melanin is produced by melanocytes, which are found in the lower layers of the epidermis. The melanocytes in some individuals produce a higher concentration of the melanin-producing genes, thereby presenting a greater concentration of pigmentation in the skin. This leads to a condition called Melasma
Melasma is a skin condition presented as brown patches on the face of adults. Both sides of the face are usually affected. The most common sites of involvement are the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, and upper lip. The precise cause of melasma is unknown. People with a family history of melasma are more likely to develop melasma themselves. A change in hormonal status may also trigger melasma. It is commonly associated with pregnancy and called cholasma, or the "mask of pregnancy"
It will only be possible to remove the anti-aesthetic skin blemishes and recover the smoothness of the skin, bringing back its luminosity, with a treatment called COSMELAN®. COSMELAN® is a brightening cosmetic treatment that has a direct effect on the immediate formation process of the pigment (melanin).
COSMELAN® action mechanism is based on the inhibition of tyrosinase, a basic enzyme in the melanin formation process. Several of the substances present in the COSMELAN® formula act by blocking the enzyme, or even by inverting the metabolic process of the transformation chain.
